Marlu Lake - September 2019 - Kayak Trip

Image
It's the first day of September but we aren't letting summer go without a fight. Even though we're tired and a little sore from yesterday's paddle we decided to head out again. Two days in a row! We were actually surprised that this was the first time that happened. Since we just wanted a simple, effortless paddle we headed over to Marlu Lake at Thompson Park in Lincroft, NJ. The parks and recreation staff were renting canoes so there was a little bit of traffic at the launch. Once we launched it was pretty quiet. A few fishermen and the renters but we were mostly alone on the water. We didn't see too much wildlife other than the ubiquitous turtles. There is a bridge over the water that is a main feature of the lake. Beyond the bridge the water was too shallow and muddy to get through so we turned around and headed back under the bridge. Marlu is a small lake so when we made it back to the launch point we decided to head back out and loop a small islan...

Prospertown Lake - August 2019 - Kayak Trip

Summer is rapidly coming to a close (insert heavy sigh). This summer was extremely busy and we were not able to get out in the kayaks as much as we would have liked. Now we are trying to catch up and make the most of thee nice weather weekends we have left. This trip brought us to an interesting little location, Prospertown Lake in Jackson, NJ. This man-made lake and wildlife management area is an excellent spot for some low impact paddling with a little extra interest of being located right next door to the Six Flags Great Adventure amusement park—you can see (and hear) some of the roller coasters from the water. We arrived at 9:30 am and were there in time to see the empty car test runs before the park was open.  There is an especially good view of the Nitro coaster. We could also see the “Six Flags” tower of Skyscreamer, and the crazy flipping coaster The Joker.   Many turtles, mostly maps and sliders. We also had a close encounter with a heron—he let ...

Water Baby

Growing up I was one of those kids that always wanted to be in the water. You could never get me out of the pool/the bath/the ocean.  I could spend hours swimming. Mom had lots of tricks to try and get me out—setting a timer was her favorite. I had tricks to stay in like falling back in or swimming underwater so I couldn't hear her yelling for me to come out. She used to say she was sure I had gills. Those summers were some of the happiest of my life and even now being near the water makes me feel calm and happy. I was fortunate to find a husband who, if he didn't have exactly the same obsession with the water as me, still felt that feeling you get when you are near the sea. And he is willing to give anything a try (maybe with a little convincing). These days there are a bunch of water related things that we do—Scuba, Snorkeling, Swimming, Kayaking and Traveling. We hope to use this blog to keep track of it all and share our adventures with the world. Hope you enjoy coming ...
